The Studio Kay Westmaas

Named one of the 20 up-and-coming interior designers to watch by House & Garden, Studio Westmaas is an interior architecture and design company based in Richmond, London. Founded in 2016 by Kay Westmaas, the studio is dedicated to reimagining existing residential spaces, creating modern day sanctuaries that offer respite from the demands of modern living.

Kay creates timeless, uncomplicated interiors that outlive fleeting trends. From full-scale spatial rearrangements to bespoke joinery design, the studio has the ability to breathe new life into any space. Drawing on a muted palette, natural materials and tactile fabrics, each Studio Westmaas project is characterised by an understated luxury and a coherent sense of calm that effortlessly contributes to the quality of life.

The clients’ practical and emotional requirements guide the creative process, as does a commitment to sustainable design and quality craftsmanship. With the client at the forefront of each project, Kay and her team are meticulous in selecting local suppliers and artisans to source contemporary pieces, artworks, one-of-a-kind antiques and custom-made furniture to make each space authentic to the client.

The studio undertakes projects in the UK and abroad and is currently working on a Grade-II listed house in Holland Park, an apartment in Paddington, two whole-house renovations in Richmond and a ground floor remodel in Kew. Browse our Projects page for more information.

After gaining a BA Honours degree in Interior Architecture in 2010, Kay went on to develop her design skills working at luxury interior design companies in London, Barbados and Dubai.

In 2011, Kay relocated to Barbados for two years, during which time she worked for the design studio, Archers Hall. Here, she designed over 20 luxury villas for some of the world's most discerning clients.

In 2013, Kay worked for WA International in Dubai, overseeing the design of their flagship five-star Renaissance Hotel.

Kay returned to the UK in 2013 where she worked for Kelly Hoppen and Rose Uniacke before launching Studio Westmaas in 2016.

With a father hailing from North Yorkshire and a Barbadian mother, Kay’s childhood was split between Caribbean beaches and roaming the English countryside. Studio Westmaas draws on these experiences to enhance and give richness to each project.

Kay currently resides in London with her husband and daughter.
